Social Spaces

Students need casual spaces where they can relax and socialize away from the watchful eyes of adults. EAR has the advantage of a climate that encourages outdoor life.

I added benches and water stations in shady places around the secondary  buildings. A mural is added every year as a Freshman Art project. Students immediately adopted those nooks as places to chat, work, read, game - and sometimes nap.

As an administrator, one gives up some control of these spaces, but it is so important for adolescent development to have places they "own". I simply create the opportunities for good things to happen.

Curricular Choice

At EAR, I re-structured the parameters of the master schedule to increase time for AP courses, better utilize teacher strengths, and create the flexibility for more electives. More students were able to take AP courses, and new electives were offered:
Community Service
Drama
Guitar
Digital Music
Creative Writing
Web Design

Students who have choices are more motivated and more invested in their education
